Household Electricity Demand, Revisited

چکیده

Recent efforts to restructure electricity markets have renewed interest in assessing how consumers respond to price changes. This paper develops a model for evaluating the effects of alternative tariff designs on residential electricity use. The model concurrently addresses several inter-related difficulties posed by nonlinear pricing, heterogeneity in consumer price sensitivity, and consumption aggregation over time. We estimate the model using extensive data for a representative sample of 1,300 California households. The results imply a strikingly skewed distribution of household electricity price elasticities in the population, with a small fraction of households accounting for most aggregate demand response. We then estimate the aggregate and distributional consequences of recent tariff structure changes in California, the consumption effects of which have been the subject of considerable debate. ∗Graduate School of Business, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305-5015, and NBER. Household electricity demand estimation: a regression discontinuity design approach

Estimating electricity demand elasticity in different sectors has been an essential research topic. Considering the fact that pricing electricity in various countries does not follow the same rules, many econometrics methods have been developed to estimate this crucial parameter. Electricity demand elasticity is defined as the percent change in electricity consumption in response to one percent...

Evaluation of Electricity Demand Management Policies: Behavioral Economics Approach 

Electricity consumption has been rising with an average annual growth of 7% in Iran and the imbalance in production and consumption has caused power outage crisis and economic losses. More than 50% of peak electricity demand is related to the household sector, so the household sector can be considered as the most effective component of the electricity crisis. Investment costs for the constructi...

The Effect of Raising Electricity Price on Welfare of the Household Sector in Rural Areas of Guilan Province, Iran

Present study investigates the effect of soaring residential electricity price on the welfare of rural individuals in Guilan Province by Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) in which the elasticity’s and welfare variations were calculated by Compensation Variations (CV) and Equivalent Variations (EV) for the time period of 1991-2012. It was shown that the absolute value of income and price elastic...

Estimating Elasticity for Residential Electricity Demand in China

Residential demand for electricity is estimated for China using a unique household level dataset. Household electricity demand is specified as a function of local electricity price, household income, and a number of social-economic variables at household level. We find that the residential demand for electricity responds rather sensitively to its own price in China, which implies that there is ...
